So, here goes…

Winter is here!

And such is the time for chapped lips, dry skin, and those little but painful cracks around your fingertips. And unfortunately, even if we bundle up in a hat, scarf, and mittens, the one part of our body that is exposed to the elements 365 days a year is our lips. Because of this, nearly everyone struggles at some point in the winter with dry, chapped or rough lips.

The skin on our lips is much thinner than most people realize. On our face, the skin can be up to 16 layers thick, while our lips are only about 3 to 5 layers thick. And this thinness, coupled with daily exposure to cold, dry, harsh air in the winter, heat, sun, chlorine, salt in the summer, and the food and drink we take in every day, makes them extra susceptible to dryness and chapping.

Enter lip balm…or Remedy Balm as we refer to it here at Herbalicious.

We should all be slathering this stuff on every chance we get this season.

Balm serves to moisturize and protect those over exposed and ultra-sensitive parts. Ideally the emollient ingredients in balm, like olive or sunflower oil and cocoa butter, work to soften and smooth while the wax protects the area from exposure to wind, cold or hot temperatures, and moisture from licking, eating, and drinking. Additionally, balm helps to temporarily seal the cracks in and around lips which helps to prevent infections and gives lips a more youthful healthy appearance.

At Herbalicious, we took caring for our lips (and fingers, and hands, and elbows) one step further. We have infused the oil base of our Remedy Balm with the mending and nourishing power of Calendula, Comfrey, and Chickweed - three amazing plants known for their ability to mend, nourish, and repair damaged and compromised tissue.

~ Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is one of the world’s best skin soothers. It is recognized the world over for its remarkable wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties while being gentle enough for even babies and children.

~ Comfrey (Symphytum uplandicum) has been used for hundreds of years to repair and renew damaged tissue and reduce inflammation.

~ Chickweed (Stellaria media) has anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties  that make it excellent for treating a host of skin ailments including minor burns, eczema, scrapes and rashes.

Remedy Balm is a powerhouse skin protector. We’ve harnessed the mending and soothing properties of the herbs and blended them with jojoba oil, cocoa butter and a touch of beeswax to create a balm that is useful all year round. And we’ve put it in a full half ounce tin (that’s more than twice the size of a regular lip balm) so that it lasts and lasts.

And for the BEST part…

Until February 28th, when you purchase a Remedy Balm on HerbaliciousSkincare.com and use the code REMEDY at checkout, you will receive 15% off your entire order! Because we want you to have healthy protected skin. Always.

We’d also like to share a great recipe for a lip scrub that perfectly compliments our Remedy Balm. Used once a day before bed and followed by a nice slathering of balm, lip scrub will gently and effectively slough away rough flakey skin and condition lips.

Additionally, this scrub and balm combo are also amazing treatments for your hands during these cold, dry winter months. Simply scoop out a generous portion of scrub, apply to wet hands, making sure to focus on the cuticles and fingertips and rinse with warm water. Follow with Remedy Balm. Make sure to really work the balm in to the fingertips and cuticles.

With only 3 ingredients, this scrub couldn’t be easier to make. We use only sugar, sunflower oil, and jojoba oil in this recipe. Sugar is a wonderful, readily available and 100% natural exfoliant. In this recipe we use finely ground sugar, but you can feel free to use whatever you have in your cupboard. Sunflower and jojoba oils nourish and soothe leaving your lips supple, smooth, and primed for balm.

We recommend doubling, or even tripling, this recipe so you can regularly give your lips and hands some much needed love and care. The recipe makes 1 ounce of scrub so you can simply adjust your container accordingly. We always recommend glass jars as they’re washable, reusable, and recyclable. Re-purposed jam jars are a great option!

Lip Conditioning Scrub

Makes: 1 ounce of scrub

Ingredients:

 • 2 Tbsp + 1 tsp (32g) finely ground organic sugar - this can be done in a clean coffee grinder

• 2 tsp sunflower oil - or oil of your choice

• 1/2 tsp jojoba oil

*Here at Herbalicious we keep things as simple as possible. That means we only add essential oil to a product if there is a specific and known skin benefit, not simply for the sake of smell. But feel free to mix it up and add a drop or two of your favorite essential oil to truly make this scrub your own.

 Instructions:

 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly until sugar and oil are well incorporated.

* If using finely ground sugar, let the mixture rest for a few minutes before transferring to a jar. It may seem too dry at first and you might be tempted to add more oil. Don’t. It takes a few extra minutes for the oil to fully soak into the super fine sugar.

2. Put scrub into a jar with a tight-fitting lid

3. Once daily, apply a small amount of scrub to lips in a circular motion.

4. Remove with a warm washcloth.

Resist the urge to lick it off! Saliva is extremely drying to lips!

5. Follow with Remedy Balm to seal in moisture.

And there you have it!
