April 2019

Live Cleaner and Greener

To celebrate the arrival of Spring, we’d like to focus the April newsletter not on what Herbalicious products can do for you – reduce acne, inflammation and wrinkles, soften and soothe skin, etc. - but why you want to use organic botanical products in the first place.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the average American is exposed to almost 200 synthetic and potentially toxic chemicals every single day. This exposure comes through the products we use on our bodies and around our homes, the food we eat, the water we drink, the pesticides and fertilizers we use in and around our yards, and the air we breathe.  Research has shown that exposure to the chemicals found in common household products has significant detrimental effects on our health. Cancer, Chronic Fatigue, type 2 Diabetes, birth defects, hormone imbalances, allergies, asthma, behavioral/mood disorders, neurological conditions, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease have all been linked to exposure to chemicals most of us don’t even know we’re putting in and on ourselves every day. It’s estimated that the average adult body carries at least 700 of these toxins. In a 2004 study spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) in collaboration with Commonweal, researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in the umbilical cord blood of newborn babies. The umbilical cord blood harbored pesticides, consumer product ingredients, and wastes from burning coal, gasoline, and garbage. To say this is alarming would be an understatement.

As consumers, we’re led to believe that the products we buy at the store have been tested and proven safe. We believe that there’s no way manufacturers would be allowed to sell us products that could be considered dangerous.  But, actually, there is very little regulation in the U.S. concerning what ingredients manufacturers can use in skincare and cosmetics products and what ingredients must be listed on the label. Companies that manufacture cleaning products for household and commercial use are not actually obligated to list the ingredients on their products. And they are not obligated to even mention on their label certain ingredients – including those known to be harmful to humans – if those ingredients fall under the label “trade secret” or “proprietary blend.” That means manufacturers can legally use dangerous and potentially harmful ingredients in products many consumers use every single day. The European Union bans 1,328 chemicals from cosmetics that are known to cause cancer, genetic mutation, and reproductive harm or birth defects (EU Cosmetic Regulation 1223/2009 enacted July 2013). In contrast, the U.S. FDA has only banned or restricted 11 of these chemicals. And it’s not just the EU, more than 40 nations including Cambodia, Vietnam, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Japan, Romania, South Korea, and Thailand have stronger regulations restricting the use of dangerous chemicals in cosmetic products than the U.S.

 That is truly scary.

And it is part of the motivation behind the creation of Herbalicious Skincare.

We suggest that for your health and the health of your family - when choosing products to nourish your skin or clean your house or do your laundry, you choose safe, non-toxic botanically based products. Because day-after-day, year-after-year, the toxins add up.

The EPA says that more of this toxic exposure comes from within our homes than from outside (www.epa.gov/indoor-air-quality-iaq/inside-story-guide-indoor-air-quality). Scary, yes. But that also means that we have the power to make changes that can drastically reduce our chemical exposure and improve our health and wellbeing. If exposure to hundreds or thousands of dangerous chemicals boils down to the products we use to care for our bodies and clean our homes, then a few simple choices and changes can make a world of difference. We may not be able to control what is in the air we breathe or what our neighbors use to fertilize their lawn, but we can control what happens in our homes and what we put in and on our bodies.

Commit to using organic botanical skin and body care products.

- Over 60% of what you apply on your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream, which then gets circulated around your whole body.

- Herbalicious Skincare (and other similar organic, small batch brands) contain NO toxins chemicals or harmful ingredients.

- Organic skin care products are less likely to cause allergic reactions, inflammations or irritations.

- Organic botanical skincare is just as potent and effective as conventional products.

- Organic and sustainable farming is better for the environment
