July/August 2019

Summer is here!

Tis’ the season for long lazy days by the lake or ocean, weekend barbecues, cold drinks, and lots and lots of sunscreen. I don’t know about you but summer is my favorite season. It’s always held a sort of magical place in my heart. Even as a child, summer vacation seemed so full of life and possibility. Maybe because we knew it was fleeting, every day had to be savored. Fall would come soon enough, school would start, and these warm, lazy, sun-filled days would be a memory. I look forward to it all year long and when it ends, I feel sad to my bones. One of my favorite summer rituals is to pack up the kids (or my husband for date night) and a picnic dinner and head to the beach at about four in the afternoon. We stay until the sun goes down and then sleep like babies at night. I feel relaxed just thinking about it.

But on a more Herbalicious note, summer is also a time when I (and you) need to be vigilant about proper sun and skin care. Sun, salt, sand, chlorine, sweat, plants, bugs, and even sunscreen can wreak havoc on skin. Rashes, pimples, and sunburn, can take your summer from magnificent to miserable in a flash. With so many elements bombarding us in this, best of all seasons, it’s imperative to maintain an ultra clean and fairly regimented skincare routine - and that goes for body as well as face. We may not be able to see it with the naked eye, but summer is a very drying and damaging time for skin. In fact, by the time we can see the dry patches or rash or burn, significant damage has already been done.

The summer is not the time for super harsh exfoliants or intense facial treatments. On average, it takes the skin about 21 days to fully recover from an intense microdermabrasion, anti-aging peel or professional glycolic acid treatment. During that time, your skin is particularly delicate and vulnerable to burns and rashes. Our advice is to wait until the fall for those intense treatments.

In fact, our best summer skincare advice is to stick with a simple, clean, consistent routine. Apply sunscreen EVERY SINGLE MORNING and wash your face well EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Make sunscreen just another part of your daily routine. You wouldn't leave the house without brushing your teeth - don’t leave without applying sunscreen either. Period.

Herbalicious Daily Essentials (Rosewater Cleanser, Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, Balancing Toner & Nourishing Face Oil) do a great job of covering all of your basic skincare needs without stripping skin of important oils, clogging pores or causing breakouts. On the contrary, the daily essentials regimen will gently but effectively clean, exfoliate and nourish your skin while fighting acne, fine lines and wrinkles, age and sun spots (hyperpigmentation) and keeping your complexion hydrated and glowing all summer long. Skin that has been exposed to sun, salt, chlorine, sunscreen, etc. has been compromised and can be particularly prone to further damage and breakouts. Herbalicious products are specifically formulated to encourage cell turnover, fight free radicals and restore health and vitality to compromised skin.

We also recommend that you drink LOTS of water. It hydrates both your body and skin. And wear a wide brimmed hat when you’ll be spending a prolonged time in the sun. There are a lot of really cute hats available now to match virtually every style. Find one that suits you and wear it. Trust us, you won’t regret it.

While caring for your face is top on our list of important things to discuss, we would be remiss if we didn't remind you that you also have skin on the rest of your body - and it needs love too. Exfoliate your body in the bath or shower once a week using a gentle mixture of one part oil and 3 parts sugar. The sugar will slough away dead skin and the oil will soften. We also recommend that every single time you step out of the shower, you moisturize - either with a body oil (homemade is easiest) or a body moisturizer made with clean, pronounceable ingredients. Your skin may not always feel dry in the summer but as I said before, by the time if feels dry, your skin is already parched.

The number one most important piece of advice we have for keeping summer skin healthy and vibrant is to WEAR SUNSCREEN - specifically a mineral sunscreen that provides a physical block from the sun. The most common active ingredients in chemical sunscreens - oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, avobenzone, octisalate, and octocrylene can irritate our skin, cause allergies, increase our chances of getting cancer, and do damage to marine habitats. Conversely, mineral sunscreen is calming to the skin (think diaper rash cream) and can be very soothing. Often, mineral sunscreens also contain skin loving ingredients that help to fight wrinkles, premature aging and acne. Yes, it takes a smidge longer to rub in but the benefits way outweigh the extra few minutes it takes to apply. And for those of us who just really love the sunkissed bronze of a tan, use a self tanner. The science behind these products has come a long way in recent years and there are several really good options out there - no more orange streaks.

And finally…

If you do find yourself with a sunburn - be sure to care for it gently and particularly!

Start with a cool shower to gently clean any dirt, sweat, sand, sunscreen, etc. off your skin. The cool water will also help soothe the burn and bring the skin temperature down. You want to use the gentlest cleanser, whether body or face, that you can find - one that will clean the affected area without further stripping or drying out the skin. We recommend Rosewater Cleanser for your face. And NEVER scrub a sunburn! Skip any kind of scrubbing or exfoliating until the burn is completely healed.

In the first 24 hours or so when the burn is still fresh and your skin is likely still warm or even hot to the touch, be sure to avoid using any oil-based moisturizers or creams. Oil can trap heat and make your sunburn or peeling even worse. After washing the affected area, you can apply a cold compress to the burn to help draw out the heat and soothe the sting. The ingredients in Balancing Toner make it an excellent compress. The combination of apple cider vinegar, witch hazel and rosewater work synergistically to soothe skin, reduce inflammation and draw out heat all while keeping your skin soft and hydrated.

Our recommendation -

Add about 8 oz. of cold water to a bowl. Add about 4 tablespoons Balancing Toner to the water. Soak a washcloth in the mixture and squeeze out excess liquid. Apply washcloth to the affected area and leave on until it becomes warm. Repeat the process. Alternately you can simply apply Balancing Toner to a cotton pad and dab all over the burned area. Once you’ve cooled the affected area, apply 100% pure aloe vera gel to the burn. Aloe is one of the best natural remedies for sunburn and is sometimes even used by hospitals to treat minor burns. It is really important that you read the ingredients on any bottle of aloe vera gel that you buy at the store. The ONLY ingredient should be aloe vera. Most of the commercial “sunburn gels” you will find at the store will also contain colors, fragrances, and alcohol - all of which will make your burn dry, itchy, and potentially worse. And real aloe gel is clear - not green!

After the first 24 hours, you should begin to apply a more intense soothing and softening salve to the burn. This will speed healing and keep skin as soft as possible. The very best recommendation we have for this is Wellness Salve. Every single summertime first aid kit should include a tin of Salve. The herbal infusion in Wellness Salve is unmatched in its ability to soothe, soften and restore damaged skin. Apply salve several times a day and always after a shower or swimming. If your burn is deep enough that the skin peels, keep applying the salve through the whole process. This will ensure that the new skin underneath the burn remains smooth, hydrated and healthy. And remember, even the new skin beneath the burn is compromised - which means more vulnerable to burns and infections, so make sure to apply sunscreen liberally every single time your skin is exposed to the sun. You don’t want to damage the new healthy skin.
